Concrete Jungle
I had the opportunity to volunteer with the Concrete Jungle to harvest persimmons. This organization donates the fresh fruits and vegetables to communities that struggle to feed their families. The persimmons picked by us were donated to the Athens-Clarke County community.
Volunteering with Concrete Jungle was a meaningful reminder of how small actions can create a large impact. By being able to help harvest persimmons, we were able to redirect these fruits to families in Athens-Clarke County instead of letting them go to waste. The Concrete Jungle’s mission to bridge the gap between food abundance and food insecurity deeply resonates with me and my goal of improving local food access and health equity.
This experience strengthened my belief in community-based solutions and the importance of addressing determinants of health at the ground level. Being part of this effort showed me the value of hand-on public health work and how collective actions can help to nourish and uplift entire communities.
